Kerala - Karunagappally
Karunagappally located 27 kms from Kollam town. Karunagappally is a municipality of Kollam. It\'s a place with beautiful backwaters,resorts, beaches(where river meets sea)
However, there is another claim that \'Pally\' is a term with Buddhist roots and that Karungappally was a Buddhist settlement in early times and that the name has its origin in a famous Buddhist education centre in the area. It is also argued that nearby Karthigappally and Mynagappally too were Buddhist centres of learning. Remnants are suggesting a Buddhist past of the place that have been found in many locations here. From Puthenkulam (the pond of the Budha) at Maruturkulangara in Karungappally taluk, idol of the Buddha discovered. The idol was cut out of a single piece of rock and was first installed in Karunagappally town and after many years, reinstalled in the compound of the Krishnapuram palace, which is now an archeological monument. Some scholars are of the conjectural opinion that the statue is of the 7th century.
Padanayarkulangara, a major temple with some historical value is in Karunagappally. Once Padanayarkulangara was one of the military stations of Kayamkulam Raja.Kayamkulam, Mavelikkara and Karunagappally were previously known as Onattukara.The world known Amritapuri is located here, which is the main Ashram of Mata Amritanandamayi. It is about 4kms from Karunagappally town.
The Oachira Parabrahmam Temple is about 9Km north from Karunagappally town. It is also referred to as Oachira Padanilam. The major festival held in Oachira temple is \"Vrishchikolsavam\" (the name comes from one of the months of Malayalam calender, because the festival is conducted in Vrishchikam).
The main tourist attraction is the House Boat Facility in Alumkadavu, which is close to Karunagappally town. The fresh water lake Sasthamkotta is situated in Karunagappally, which spreads over 375 hectares. The famous Lord Ayyappa Temple is located in Sasthamkotta, the striking feature of the temple is hundreds of monkeys inhabits the surroundings believed to be the guests of the ruling deity.
Every year Sree Narayana Trophy Boat Race in Kannety (Pallickal) River is also held in Karunagappally, which is during the season of Onam Festival.
Another attraction is the famous mosque Sheikh Masjid which resembles one of the wonders of the world, Taj Mahal.
Screw pine weaving of mats is one of the oldest crafts popular in Thazhava (Karunaggappally).
Thevalakkara is very famous in Kerala history connected with Portuguese attack in Thevalakara temples & orthodox church in 1544.

Thazhava in Kollam (Quilon) district of Kerala is a small beautiful village. Here many seek a livelihood based on Thazha or screw pine. Screwpine weaving of mats is one of the oldest crafts popular in Thazhava. Even though now the weaving of screw pine mats have been comparatively reduced than the earlier times, there exists few traditional weavers who still continue this profession. Mats are now being exported within as well as outside India.
In the ancient times, screw pine mats were weaved and distributed in bulk to various provinces within Kerala including Travancore province.
